In 2018, the City of Jefferson, Cole County, and Callaway County received approval from the Missouri Highways and Transportation Commission for the designation of the Heartland Port Authority of Central Missouri to become a political subdivision of the state. The boundary of the Heartland Port Authority of Central Missouri is the entirety of Cole and Callaway Counties.
